A Leader in Recycling

Every year, an estimated 9-10 million tons (8 million metric tons) of asphalt roofing waste are sent to U.S. landfills. One company that has made giant strides in reducing this waste is Ray’s Roofing Supply. For over 35 years Ray’s Roofing Supply has effectively recycled millions of pounds of scrap roofing materials on an annual basis. In fact, over 95% of the material acquired by Ray’s Roofing Supply is classified as scrap upon arrival, but is latter processed for reuse. The unique recycling and processing procedures used by Ray’s Roofing Supply not only reduce waste, but also result in the availability of affordable reuse products. Ray’s Roofing Supply offers a full line of commercial and residential roofing products that have been sorted, processed, and repackaged as a re-use product.

Reducing Waste

One of our most impressive environmental accomplishments is what we have done to reduce the waste of standard three-tab roofing shingles. The process begins with our purchasing waste roofing shingles from various roofing manufactures. When we receive material we have our employees physically go through each piece of shingle inspecting it for defects. All discovered defects are removed from the batch and set aside to be processed as starter strip. The shingles that appear to be of “good quality” are counted out and repackaged. These repackaged shingles are then sold as a generic product at an economical price. The repackaged shingles are often attractive to lower income families that otherwise could not afford a new roof.

Even the unusable gets used!

The shingles that we cannot recycle in the first step are then to sent to our secondary production line where we inspect, restack and feed the product into a shearing mechanism, which cuts the shingle. The upper portion of the shingle is then collected stacked and packaged as a usable 7″ starter strip. The bottom portion of the shingle is sent to a waste facility where the material is set aside and designated to be ground up as road fill for hot asphalt mix.
